Avalon Park began as Johnathon Pierce began to develop the area under the name “Pierce’s Park” in 1888. The Avalon Park Community Church (founded in 1896) led an effort to change the name of the area, and in 1910 the name was changed to Avalon Park.
As the area grew up until recent times, home ownership has remained fairly strong. Many single family homes and bungaloes are found throughout the area.
Both the Marynook and Stone Island Park area neighboods within Avalon.
The neighborhood is serviced by the Metra as well as the I-90 / Skyway services the area.
