An eight-block area around the intersection of Cermak and Wentworth Avenues on Chicago’s Near South Side, Chinatown is one of Chicago’s most colorful neighborhoods, where Chinese heritage is a part of daily life.
Historically, settlement began after the Civil War, with the arrival of European immigrants, up to the end of the 19th century. Chinese immigrants, were based south of the Loop, in what became modern day Chinatown. Established in 1905, it has become a leading tourist attraction and is one of the largest Chinese communities in the U.S.
The Chinatown Gate and distinctive landmarks like On Leong Merchants Association Building, Ping Tom Memorial Park and the Buddhist Temple or the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, along with numerous dining and shops Chinatown hosts the biggest Chinese mall in the American Midwest – Chinatown Square.
While space for new housing in Chinatown Real Estate is limited, a large-scale redevelopment is has occurred and is still ongoing including plans to bring new-construction town homes and condominiums to the area. Buyers also can find existing two- and three-flats and older single-family homes that are more typical of the area.
