West Garfield Park neighborhood is situated west of Garfield Park, a park that received its namesake from President James Garfield, after whom the city renamed the park after his assassination in 1881. Today, the park’s Golden Dome field house has an Olympic-sized gymnasium, boxing ring, theater and fitness centers. Park visitors also can enjoy picnicking, outdoor concerts and festivals.
K-Town, a nickname that refers to streets between Cicero and Pulaski that starts with the letter “K” with K-Town extending into the north Lawndale area. A portion of K-Town was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1910 because of the concentration of architectural history in the area with homes ranging from Dutch gable single-family houses to greystone homes.
The Garfield Park Conservatory, offers a quiet respite from the city with a massive greenhouse and activities including kids’ exhibits and special events. World famous artist, Chihuly had an art installation featured at the Conservatory which was damaged at a loss of approximately $70,000.
Area residents can access the CTA’s Green Line and Blue Line train which connect downtown Chicago to the west as well as the 290.
