Hermosa

European settlement in Hermosa began in the 1880s, following the extension of Chicago and Pacific Rail Road that passed through the area. James F. Keeney, who owned much of the land developed many of the homes in the area, and along with the entry of industry and other factories. attracted new settlers into the area.

Although it is rumored that the first name for the area was “Pacific,”  the first official name of the area was Garfield, after the former president. However, since another post office already carried that name, and residents were seeking to establish a post office at the rail station in the area, the name “Hermosa” which means beautiful in Spanish, was suggested by Mr. Peebles, secretary to the superintendent of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Rail Road. In 1889, it was incorporated into Chicago.

Hermsoa went through a building boom during the 1920’s as the area is surrounded by railroad tracks on three sides, allowing for industrial development to occur through the decade. A majority of the neighborhood was built around this time, with approximately 63% of the buildings being built before 1940.

With gentrification occurring next door in Avondale and Logan Square, Hermosa has seen some rise in housing prices and businesses, although as one of the most densely populated neighborhoods, development is not as quick as neighboring areas.
